Two years ago I inherited a dreamy, third floor art room with lots of natural light and a killer view of my favorite metropolis! I also inherited a boatload of display wall real estate which I love dearly but keeps me beyond busy to keep updated. Now, don't get me wrong, once the artists get busy turning out artwork, it's easy to know what to display, but for many years I was at a loss for what to put up for that first month of school before the art started a-flowin'! Does anyone else ever feel this way?
Anyways, I know a lot of folks find Pinterest to be a bulletin board inspiration goldmine, but I've never felt right hacking someone else's bright idea. I also am a real stickler for displays that build upon knowledge content and inspire curiosity.
Last year, I had the idea to create an "ART NEWS" board with kid-friendly breaking news from the art world. I think about my kiddos a lot during the summer and one of the ways I deal with the blackhole of loneliness their absence creates in my life (<----dramatic much?) is to collect a bundle of art news stories to share with them once school starts again!
After I find the stories, I create a large-scale, newspaper-like design on Canva. I strive for large text, attention grabbing headlines, and bright, hi-res images.. I know a guy at my local print shop who prints these for me at 11 x 17, but I know the going rate for this size @ FedEx is around 29 cents/print.
Here are a few examples of this year's headlines. I'll be sure to post an update with the entire ART NEWS board once it is installed!
